Psalms 73:23-26 NKJV.
23 Nevertheless I am continually with You;
You hold me by my right hand.
24 You will guide me with Your counsel,
And afterward receive me to glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but You?
And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
26 My flesh and my heart fail;
But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

King David referred to God as his portion in Psalm 16:5: “O Lord, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup”. He echoed it also in Psalm 142: 5 “I cried out to You, O Lord:
I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living”.
Asaph in Psalm 73:26 wrote that “God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” . While Lamentations 3:24 says, “‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him”.
What does it mean when one say “GOD IS MY PORTION ? Sometimes the word “PORTION” is translated as an “INHERITANCE.” Saying that God is your portion is another way of saying that He is your inheritance, your allotment in life. When we say that God is our portion, we are saying that He is our all-sufficient One, the source of all we could ever need. For in Him we Live, Move and have our Bearing.
In the Old Testament, each Israelite tribe, apart from the priestly tribe of Levi, received an allotment of land aportioned to them on arrival in the Promised Land. “Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers. The Lord is his inheritance, as the Lord your God said to him. (Deuteronomy 10:9).
This land was their family inheritance and was passed on from one generation to the next. No inheritance in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors. (Numbers 36:7).
As was indicated with the tribe of Levi, another side to the concept of inheritance is that God Himself can be the inheritance of His people. “He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the people of his inheritance— the Lord Almighty is his name” (Jeremiah 10:16). NIV.
The New Testament furthers this by describing Believers as “CO-HEIRS” with JESUS CHRIST the Son of God, for we have been grafted into the family of God through Jesus redeeming us from our sins We have become the adopted sons and daughters of God. “But to all who did accept him and believe in him he gave the right to become children of God”. (John 1:12)
So you are no longer a slave, but God’s Child; and since you are his child God has made you also an heir. “Who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory”. Ephesians 1:14. The presence of the Holy Spirit within our lives is the guarantee of this “Eternal Inheritance” we have Received.
The Bible makes it clear that all people have the opportunity to become children of God and recipients of the same inheritance. Ephesians 3:6
This doesn’t mean that the life of a believer in Christ is easy; it means we have the grace of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives to help us as we journey through life, and we have the promise of eternity with Christ. God Almighty is the source of our sufficiency Jesus says: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” . This is what it looks like to choose to make the Lord your portion.
By saying, “GOD IS MY PORTION” the biblical writers, and now us, are affirming that God is our source of all that is good. He is our portion in the life that is now and the life that is to come. He is the only inheritance that matters to us. For the Lord to be our portion it means that He is our inheritance. He is our treasure, He is that which we have been allotted to like the Tribe of Levi.
“In Christ we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.
Trials and tribulations are inevitable in this life on earth. For as long as the enemy is around, he will try to weigh us down and wary us with many problems. There will be times where we will physically and emotionally feel like we cannot go on. God will give us strength and refresh us throughout the way. He will hold our hand and be with us, no matter what we face for He is our allotment in Life.
PRAYER
The Lord is my portion in life I am not perturbed by the roaring of the devil May the good Lord who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ Jesus forever remain our inheritance in Jesus name Amen.
REFLECTION
Our inheritance in Christ is unfading. What we have in Christ is an enduring possession. As creatures of this world, it is hard for us to imagine colors that never fade, excitement that never flags, or value that never depreciates; but our inheritance is not of this world. Its glorious intensity will never diminish. God says, “I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:5).
